How do I use Acrobat to redact text?

If you have a PDF with text, you might be able to redact some of the information. To do so, please follow these steps:
This guide is using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for Windows

  1. Open your document with Adobe Acrobat
  2. Go to Tools on the right hand side

    1. If you see Common Tools instead, please follow these steps to get Tools

    2. Click Customize

    3. Select Default Tools

    4. Click on Tools
      pdf_tools.png
  3. Expand the section Protection
    pdf_protection.png
  4. Click on Mark for Redaction
    pdf_mark.png
  5. Click OK

  6. Highlight the text you want to redact

  7. See that the text gets replaced with a colored box as soon as you finish selecting and highlight the text

  8. When you're finished highlighting all the text you want to redact, click on Apply Redactions

  9. Click OK

  10. Optional: Find and remove hidden information

  11. Save the document

 

Change the color of the box

  1. To change the color of the redaction box, click on Redaction Properties

  2. Change the colors:
    Redacted Area Fill Color (for the box after redactions are applied)
    Redaction Mark Appearance (for when you're highlighting text)
